A 97-year-old doctor has revealed the four key habits that helped him stay healthy and live a long life. He shared his advice with Senior Care, a non-profit that collects life lessons and health experiences from people over the age of 95.
While the doctor didn’t share his name, he said these habits are useful not just for older people but for anyone who wants to improve their health and quality of life. According to him, staying active, keeping the brain sharp, and following healthy routines can protect you from many problems that usually come with aging.
Here are the four rules he swears by:
1. Drink plenty of water
The doctor believes hydration is the most important habit. People who don’t drink enough water are at higher risk of kidney problems. Water helps flush out toxins, improves blood circulation, and research shows it lowers the chances of heart and lung diseases.
2. Exercise and lift weights
Despite his age, the doctor still works out daily and lifts light weights. He says strength training keeps muscles strong and reduces weakness and bone issues that come with age. Experts also agree that regular exercise improves sleep, reduces stress, and boosts energy.
3. Keep the brain active
According to him, mental laziness speeds up decline. People who spend their days only watching TV are more likely to face memory and cognitive issues. Instead, reading books, solving puzzles, learning new skills, or playing games can keep the brain sharp and protect against memory loss in old age.
4. Move your body every day
“Movement is the secret to life,” he said. Staying inactive for just two weeks can cause you to lose 10% of your muscle strength. Simple daily activities like walking, cycling, gardening, or light exercise lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes while also adding more healthy years to your life.
