Apple’s iPhone 17 Could Kill the SIM Card for Good and Bring a Bold New Case Design

Apple is widely expected to unveil the iPhone 17 on Tuesday, September 9, and as the launch draws near, new leaks are giving us a clearer picture of what’s coming. The latest buzz centers on eSIM support and a redesigned official case.

In the US, Apple has already dropped the physical SIM card slot in favor of eSIMs. Now, according to MacRumors, Apple Authorized Resellers in the EU have been told to get ready for iPhones without SIM trays too.

For months, rumors suggested that the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air would only work with eSIMs. It now looks like Apple plans to expand that move across more models and regions. The shift isn’t too surprising: eSIMs are considered more secure and easier to manage. Google just made a similar decision with its Pixel 10 lineup, although only US buyers are affected for now.

Meanwhile, another leak is making waves among accessory fans. Tipsters @MajinBuOfficial and @SonnyDickson shared images of what appears to be Apple’s new iPhone 17 Pro Clear Case with MagSafe. Unlike the fully transparent case Apple sells today, this one has an opaque panel that covers most of the back, hiding the MagSafe connectors.

The design also shows a larger camera cutout, lining up with earlier renders of a redesigned iPhone 17 Pro. The Apple logo has been shifted downward, sitting neatly below the camera bump.

There’s even a hint that the case will work with a new Crossbody Strap accessory, rumored to let users wear their iPhone on a magnetic lanyard.

With Apple’s big event just days away, it won’t be long before we find out if these leaks are on the money.
