Nottingham Forest have appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach, just days after parting ways with Nuno Espírito Santo.

The Australian manager is back in the Premier League only three months after being sacked by Tottenham. His deal with Forest is expected to run until 2027.

Postecoglou will now lead Forest in the Europa League, a competition he qualified Spurs for before being fired only 16 days later. Forest’s entry was confirmed after UEFA blocked Crystal Palace from taking part.

Born in Greece, Postecoglou shares close ties with Forest’s Greek owner Evangelos Marinakis. Sources say Marinakis’s strained relationship with Nuno paved the way for the change. Marinakis has long admired Postecoglou’s track record.

On Tuesday, Marinakis praised the appointment, saying

“We are bringing in a coach who has consistently won trophies. His top-level experience and ambition to build something special here make him the right man for this stage of our journey. After securing promotion and then European football, the next step is to compete for trophies. Ange has the credentials, and we are thrilled to welcome him.”

Postecoglou’s first test comes this Saturday against Arsenal. In December, he will face his old club Spurs at the City Ground. Spurs had dismissed him after a poor run left them 17th in the league with 22 defeats.

Nuno, meanwhile, had lifted Forest to seventh place last season, keeping them close to Champions League qualification for much of the campaign. His counter-attacking style now gives way to Postecoglou’s more adventurous approach, though the new boss has shown he can adapt when needed.

With the transfer window closed, Forest will have to wait until January to make any new signings.

Earlier on Tuesday, at 12:15 BST, the club confirmed Nuno’s exit. Their statement read:
“Everyone at the City Ground thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful period, especially his role in the 2024-25 season, which will always be remembered. He will always hold a special place in our history.”
