Human Rights Watch, a global human rights organization, has released a detailed report on the discrimination and atrocities against Bengali-speaking citizens in BJP-led state governments.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, sharing the report on her X (formerly Twitter) account, strongly criticized the central Modi government.
Mamata Banerjee said, “Human Rights Watch has said in its report what we have been repeating for years. BJP governments are targeting citizens only on the basis of Bengali language.” She stressed that these atrocities are being carried out systematically on the instructions of the central government.
According to the report, BJP state governments are deporting minorities as illegal immigrants on the basis of linguistic discrimination. Human Rights Watch’s Asia Director, Elaine Pearson, clarified that “BJP is targeting Bengali-speaking people, even Indian citizens, without reason.”
Mamata Banerjee stressed that these instructions have been issued by the Home Ministry headed by Home Minister Amit Shah. She said that “now even international organizations are taking notice of linguistic terrorism in India.”
The report says that this harassment, coercion and eviction is part of the extremist Hindutva policy of the Modi government. Deportation on the basis of language is a clear violation of Articles 14 and 19 of the Indian Constitution.
Mamata Banerjee alleged that “BJP is turning India away from so-called secularism and into a Hindu majority state. The eviction of Bengalis is a tactic of the BJP to increase its Hindu vote bank.”
She warned that “it is a conspiracy of the BJP to establish a dictatorship on the Hindutva ideology by eliminating minorities.” This report by an international organization is raising questions at the global level about the anti-minority policies of the Modi government.
