Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phatthama Wichayachai has expressed concern over the escalating border clash with the Cambodian army, saying that the border clashes could now turn into a war.
According to foreign media, 16 people have been killed and several injured in the border tension between Thailand and Cambodia that began yesterday.
Due to the tension, about 100,000 people have been displaced from the Thai border area to safer places, while 10,000 people have also been moved from the border areas to safer places in Cambodia.
Thai and Cambodian authorities are accusing each other.
Thai authorities say that the Cambodian army targeted hospitals and schools with missiles, which the Thai army responded by targeting Cambodian army positions.
On the other hand, the Cambodian Landmine Authority says that the cluster munitions fired by Thailand are a serious violation of humanitarian principles.
Speaking to media representatives in Bangkok, Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phatthama Wichayachai said that if border tensions with Cambodia escalate, it could escalate into war, but for now the situation is limited to clashes.
