Silicon Valley / New York: Tech heavyweights Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon are in discussions to invest as much as $60 billion in OpenAI, according to a report by The Information, as the artificial intelligence race accelerates and costs surge.
The report said Nvidia, an existing OpenAI investor whose advanced chips power many of the company’s AI models, is considering an investment of up to $30 billion. Microsoft, a long-standing strategic partner and backer, is reportedly weighing an investment of less than $10 billion.
Meanwhile, Amazon, which would join OpenAI as a new investor, is said to be in talks to invest more than $10 billion, with the figure potentially exceeding $20 billion.
OpenAI is said to be close to receiving formal term sheets, signalling potential investment commitments from the firms. Amazon and Microsoft declined to comment on the report, while Nvidia and OpenAI did not immediately respond to media queries outside regular business hours. Reuters noted it was unable to independently verify the information.
According to the report, Amazon’s potential investment could be linked to broader commercial negotiations, including an expansion of OpenAI’s cloud-server usage and a possible agreement to distribute OpenAI products, such as enterprise ChatGPT subscriptions, through Amazon’s platforms.
The latest talks come just days after reports suggested SoftBank Group is exploring an additional $30 billion investment in OpenAI.
OpenAI continues to face rapidly rising costs associated with training and operating large-scale AI models, even as competition intensifies from rivals such as Google, underscoring the growing financial demands of the global AI arms race.
