During the first session of the newly elected Australian Parliament, a protest demonstration was held in favor of Palestine and a demand was made to impose sanctions on Israel.

According to the World News Agency, Australian Greens Deputy Leader Senator Mehreen Farooqui held a placard in protest during Attorney General Sam Muston’s speech.

It read, “Gaza is starving, words are not enough, impose sanctions on Israel.” Several members also stood with her to express solidarity.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said that what they are seeing in Gaza is indefensible, the hostages should still be released but the war must end.

He added that a joint statement has been sent by the government in the form of a letter, in which a strong stance has been taken on the situation in Gaza.

On the other hand, hundreds of people gathered outside the Parliament who demonstrated in favor of Gaza and demanded the imposition of sanctions on Israel.

Some of the pro-Gaza protesters also tried to enter parliament, after which police detained more than a dozen people.

It should be noted that in the recent elections, the Labor Party won 94 seats out of the 150-member House of Representatives, which is the largest majority of any government since 1996.

The opposition Liberal Party won only 43 seats, while the remaining 13 seats are held by independents and smaller parties.

No party has a majority in the Senate, where the Labor Party has 29, the Conservative opposition 27, and the Greens 10 members.
