The United States has announced its withdrawal from the United Nations agency UNESCO, accusing it of promoting anti-Israel sentiment.
US State Department spokesperson Timmy Bruce says that continuing to participate in the United Nations organization related to education, science and culture is not in the national interest of the United States.
The United States claims that UNESCO promotes policies that create divisions at the social and cultural level. This organization also promotes an ideological agenda that is contrary to the America First foreign policy.
UNESCO’s recognition of the Palestinian state is a serious problem: US
Spokesperson Timmy Bruce said that UNESCO’s recognition of the Palestinian state is a serious problem that is contrary to US policy and has become a means of spreading anti-Israeli sentiment in the organization.
The spokesperson clarified that US participation in international organizations will be based on the policy of promoting US interests.
The US withdrawal from UNESCO will take effect on December 21, 2026. The US has officially informed UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay of its decision.
This will be the second time that the Trump administration has withdrawn from UNESCO.
It should be recalled that UNESCO had admitted Palestine as a member of the organization in October 2011, after which the US, during the Obama administration, immediately stopped its $60 million aid to the organization.
